American Public University System consists of two online universities – American Public University and American Military University. Its origins date back to 1991 with the founding of American Military University, which offers programs in homeland security, intelligence, emergency management, and more. In 2002 it joined with the American Public University and expanded its public service-related programs. Together, the system serves more than 100,000 distance learners who hail from all 50 states and more than 100 countries, including both active duty military and civilians.
Students can choose from nearly 90 degree programs offered at the associate, bachelor’s, and master’s levels. There are also 85 certificate programs available. Areas of study include homeland security, intelligence, education, emergency management, criminal justice, public safety, and national security. All courses are offered online. Unlike traditional universities that operate on a semester basis, programs start on the first Monday of every month. Most classes are taught in an eight-week or 16-week format.
The American Public University System has been regionally accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools since 2006.
