Liberty University has provided Christian-based higher education since it was founded in Lynchburg, Va., in 1971. For nearly 30 years it has also provided distance education opportunities. It is the nation’s eighth-largest four-year university, the largest private, four-year, non-profit university in the U.S., and the largest Christian university in the world. This owes in no small part to its online learners, who outnumber the school’s campus-based students nearly four to one. The school is considered among the best in the region. It was ranked 65th among universities in the South by the U.S. News & World Report.
Liberty University Online offers more than 45 online degree programs and 100 concentrations at the associate, bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral levels. Students can choose from popular areas of study, such as business, criminal justice, education, nursing, psychology, and Christian ministry and religion. The university also offers less common programs, such as ethnomusicology. Many of these undergraduate and postgraduate degrees can be completed 100% online, while others may require a minimum number of courses to be completed on campus. The school uses Blackboard as its learning portal, and courses are offered asynchronously.
Liberty University is regionally accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. It has held this accreditation since 1980.
