Western Governors University is an online institution with administrative offices in Salt Lake City, Utah. Its online degree programs can be accessed from virtually any location in the country. The school was founded by a group of state governors from around the United States with the goal of creating accessible, affordable education programs. The school is funded by 20 corporations and organizations that support its endeavor to provide convenient education options.

Programs Offered

Western Governors University focuses on offering undergraduate and graduate degree programs that are relevant to in-demand industries. These include a number of online degrees related to the healthcare industry, including a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (RN to BSN) program, several Master of Science in Nursing programs with various designations, and a Master of Healthcare Administration program. The school also offers master’s programs for licensed teachers in various areas of specialization, teaching master’s programs, post-baccalaureate programs, and undergraduate and graduate degrees in several information technology disciplines. Bachelor’s degree in education and business fields are also available online, including a Master of Business Administration (MBA) program.

Accreditation

Western Governors University is accredited by the Distance Education and Training Council, and has been since 2001. It is also accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities. It has held this accreditation since 2003.

Admissions

All applicants to Western Governors University must be at least 16 years of age and submit an online application for admission. For undergraduate admissions, students must have a high school diploma or GED and submit their test scores or transcripts. They must also complete an interview with an enrollment counselor. There may be additional requirements specified by the program to which they are applying. Graduate school applicants must submit transcripts from any previous institutions attended as well as proof of receipt of their bachelor’s degree.
