Southern Utah University is a public institution located in Cedar City, Utah. The school was founded in 1897 and has since evolved from a teacher training college to a full institution of higher learning. The school has produced several notable alumni over the years in the areas of professionals sports and politics, including former U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Michael Leavitt. It also has held an annual beauty pageant since the 1950s. The pageant winner goes on to compete in the Miss Utah pageant. Southern Utah alumna Jill Stevens was a semi-finalist at the Miss America pageant after winning the Miss Southern Utah University and Miss Utah titles.

Programs Offered

Southern Utah University offers a large selection of bachelor’s degree programs, as well as some associate degrees and certificate programs. Students can choose from fields such as studio arts, dance performance, nursing, anthropology, and countless others. Master’s degree programs in public administration, arts administration, social work, forensic science, and more are also available. Students can also earn a Master of Business Administration (MBA). Online, SUU students can complete degrees in master’s-level sports conditioning, accounting, and more.


Southern Utah University is fully accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities, and has been since 1933. Other programs and degrees at the university are also accredited by field-specific accrediting agencies.


Recent high school graduates applying for undergraduate admissions to Southern Utah University must submit their application materials by May 1 for the fall semester and December 1 for the spring semester. Be sure to check with the school to confirm application deadlines. Applications submitted after the deadline will be reviewed by the admissions department but a $25 late fee is required and students are not guaranteed admissions for late applications. Required application materials include an application for admission, a $50 application fee, and official copies of the student’s high school transcript and SAT or ACT test scores. Students applying for graduate admissions should refer to the program’s website for specific instructions, though generally, A $60 application fee and official transcripts from all institutions attended are required for all graduate programs.
