South Dakota State University is a public, four-year university located in Brookings, SD. It was established in 1881. and is ranked among national universities by U.S. News & World Report.Known as the Jackrabbits, the school participates in NCAA Division 1 Athletics for men and women’s sports. Its athletics programs have produced numerous alumni in professional sports. Pete Retzlaff, former president of the NFL Players’ Association, and Adam Vinatieri, a kicker in the National Football League and four-time Super Bowl winner, are both South Dakota State alumni. Theodore Schultz, 1979 Nobel Laureate in Economics, also graduated from the university.
The school has a well-developed online education system. It offers associate, bachelor’s, master’s, and certificate programs through distance education, as well as online courses, continuing education, adult learning, non-degree seeking programs, high school concurrent classes, and more. Students can choose from bachelor’s degree programs in nursing, sociology, or medical laboratory science. Master’s degree programs include chemistry, education, dietetics, health sciences, nursing, and more. The school partners with the Great Plains Interactive Distance Education Alliance to provide online education programs.
South Dakota State University is currently accredited by the Higher Learning Commission. It recently earned a full, 10-year reaccreditation by the commission and has been accredited since 1920.
Undergraduate admissions requirements for South Dakota State University are fairly standard among public universities nationwide. The school requires standardized test scores, including the ACT or SAT, a minimum GPA of 2.6, and a class ranking in the top 60%. Entering freshmen are also required to have four years of English, three years of social sciences, three years of advanced math, three years of laboratory sciences, and one year of fine arts. The priority deadline for undergraduate admission is January 15. For graduate admissions, students should apply for the fall semester by April 15. Graduate programs at South Dakota State have individual requirements. Some may require GRE test scores and letters of recommendation, while others may not.
