Midlands Technical College is a public two-year institution located in West Columbia, S.C. The school traces its roots back to 1947 when the South Carolina Area Trade School’s campus was established in Columbia. In 1973, three schools merged to form what is now known as Midlands Technical College. The college currently serves more than 12,000 area students. A variety of certificate and associate degree programs are offered by the college, as well as a growing number of online learning opportunities.
Midlands Technical College offers career-training programs and associate degrees designed for transfer to a four-year college or university. Majors include accounting, legal administrative assisting, criminal justice, human services, early childhood development, medical assisting, nursing, pharmacy technology, and physical therapy assisting. Students have the opportunity to enroll in fully online or hybrid courses for added flexibility. These courses are delivered through the school’s online learning platform, Desire2Learn.
Midlands Technical College has been accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools since 1974. Programs in dental assisting, dental hygiene, physical therapy, radiologic technology, nuclear medicine technology, and nursing have also earned specialized accreditation from industry-relevant organizations.
Midlands Technical College applicants need to complete and submit an admissions application form, which is available online. A downloadable version of the paper application is also available for students who prefer to submit by standard mail. A $35 application fee is due at the time of submission. Official high school transcripts or proof of GED are also required. The school has an open admissions policy; however, students must complete placement testing before they are allowed to register for classes.
