The University of Rhode Island is a public four-year institution located in Kingston, R.I. The school was established in 1892 as Rhode Island College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts and adopted its current name in 1951. Today, the university serves more than 16,000 students. The U.S. News & World Report ranked the University of Rhode Island 77th among the top public schools in the country. Graduate programs in pharmacy, library and information studies, and earth science were also recognized by the U.S. News.
The University of Rhode Island offers a variety of bachelor’s, master’s, doctoral, and certificate programs for students who have a range of professional goals. Majors include accounting, animal science, biology, business administration, computer science, education, English, journalism, marketing, music, and nursing. The university also provides distance learning opportunities for those trying to balance their work and family schedules. Online programs include business, communication, computer science, economics, gender and women’s studies, health service and administration, nursing, political science, and psychology.
The University of Rhode Island has been accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges since 1930. The university’s nurse midwifery, pharmacy, marriage and family therapy, dietetics, physical therapy, psychology, audiology, speech-language pathology, nursing, music, and teacher education programs hold specialized accreditation.
Students interested in enrolling at the University of Rhode Island need to fill out the online application form and pay a $65 fee. The early action deadline is Dec. 1. Students who want to enroll in in the engineering, nursing, and pharmacy are encouraged to apply by this deadline. The regular freshman application deadline is Feb. 1. In addition to the application form, students need to request that their official high school transcripts and SAT or ACT score reports be sent to the admissions office.
