Western Governors University is a private, nonprofit university with nearly 30,000 students across the globe. The university recently expanded to several U.S. military bases overseas to provide education to active members. WGU was founded by the governors of 19 U.S. states during a 1995 meeting of the Western Governors Association. Utah governor Mike Leavitt, the chair of the committee at the time, suggested the formation of a higher learning institution that used distance education to tackle pressing problems of rapid population growth and limited public funds. The governors enlisted the help of the Western Interstate Commission on Higher Education, and the National Center for Higher Education Management Systems to help design the curriculum. By 1997, the school was incorporated, and by 1999, the school began accepting students. Today, WGU offers its full curriculum entirely online.
Western Governors University offers bachelor’s, master’s, and certificate programs through its four different colleges: the Teachers College, the College of Business, the College of Information Technology, and the College of Health Professionals. Through the Teachers College, the school offers nine different Bachelor of Arts degrees in areas like early childhood education, mathematics, science, and special education. They also offer a number post-baccalaureate certificate, and master’s programs, for both licensed and non-licensed teachers. The School of Business offers six different Bachelor of Science degrees, and three MBA programs. The School of Information Technology offers bachelor’s, and master’s degrees in information technology. Undergraduate students can choose five different areas of interest including network administration, databases, security, and more. The College of Health Professionals offers bachelor’s and master’s degrees in nursing, a Bachelor of Science degree in Health Informatics, and a Master of Science in Nursing Education.
Western Governors University is nationally accredited by the Distance Education and Training Council (DETC), and is also regionally accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities. The WGU Teachers College was the first online only university to receive accreditation from the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). The school’s nursing program is accredited by the Commission for Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), and the health informatics program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Heath Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM)
Western Governors University’s goal is to admit students who have the ability and determination to complete a degree program through the school. To do so, they have designed their admissions policies accordingly. Prospective students are still required to fill out an application and submit any high school or college transcripts applicable, but rather than relying exclusively on those documents, all applicants are required to complete an interview with an enrollment advisor, and a readiness assessment test administered by the institution.
