The University of New England (UNE), founded in 1831, has a total enrollment of more than 7,300 students. This consists of about 4,200 undergraduate, 2,200 graduate, and 800 post-graduate students. The school has two campuses, located in Biddleford, Maine, and Portland, Maine. The coastal Biddleford campus houses the College of Arts and Sciences and the College of Osteopathic Medicine, while the Portland campus is home to the College of Pharmacy and the Westbrook College of Health Professions. UNE offers more than 30 undergraduate majors, as well as graduate programs in medicine and health. Students at the Biddleford campus can participate in more than 50 clubs, while the Portland campus has about 20 student organizations. UNE ranks No. 104 among Northern regional universities on U.S. News & World Report’‘s 2012 list of Best Colleges.
The University of New England offers certificate, bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees through six colleges. These consist of colleges of arts and sciences; dental medicine; osteopathic medicine; pharmacy; health professions; and graduate studies. The most popular majors at UNE include biological sciences, health professions, and psychology. Its College of Osteopathic Medicine is Maine’s only medical school, and the College of Arts and Sciences features a Marine Science Center that combines education, research, and marine animal rehabilitation at one facility. The University of New England also offers a number of online degrees. While most of these are certificate programs, UNE does offer a master’s degree in social work and a doctorate in education leadership, among other programs.
UNE also has four centers of excellence for research and scholarship, including the Center for Community and Public Health and the Center for Global Humanities. They are designed to provide opportunities for collaborative research and scholarship programs. The interdisciplinary centers are also designed to expand undergraduate research opportunities at UNE.
UNE has been accredited by the Commission on Institutions of Higher Education of the New England Association of Schools and Colleges since 1966. It has also received specialized accreditation from the Council on Education for Public Health; the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education of the American Physical Therapy Association; and the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation of the American Osteopathic Association.
