University of Maryland University College (UMUC) was founded in 1947 and is one of 11 institutions of higher education in the University System of Maryland. As a virtual college, UMUC offers online courses, online degree and certificate programs, and professional development options that focus on the unique educational needs of adult students. Because of its highly-accessible and flexible online programs, UMUC serves more than 90,000 students around the world, and the number of students in the U.S. has more than doubled in the last 10 years. In addition, UMUC has an overseas division that offers courses on-site in more than 25 foreign countries and territories. The college has demonstrated success in educating minorities, working adults, and military service members through its state-of-the-art curriculum. In addition to online options, students can also take on-site courses. However, UMUC is best known for its online offerings, for which it won the Sloan Consortium Award for Excellence in Institution-Wide Asynchronous Learning Network Programming.
Students who need the flexibility and convenience of an online degree have a wide variety of options at UMUC. The college offers more than 100 undergraduate degrees, graduate degrees, and certificates completely online. Online bachelor’s degree programs include the Bachelor of Arts in areas like communications studies, East Asian studies, English, graphic communication, history, and humanities, and the Bachelor of Science in areas like accounting, business administration, criminal justice, finance, legal studies, marketing, social science, and more. Undergraduate students can also choose from a wide selection of minors, including art history, emergency management, forensics, homeland security, journalism, natural science, and more. Online master’s degrees are available in areas like accounting and finance, healthcare, biotechnology, homeland security and information assurance, education, and project management. One notable program is the One-Year MBA program, which allows students to complete a shorter, more intensive MBA program in a cohort environment. The college also offers two different online Doctor of Management options.
UMUC is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. The university has maintained this accreditation since 1946.
Prospective students apply to UMUC by completing the online application for admission, paying an application fee, and submitting all the documents required for the program to which they are applying. General requirements for undergraduate programs include that the applicant possess a high school diploma or GED, and possess a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher on all college-level work completed at regionally accredited institutions thus far, if applicable. Those applying to graduate programs must possess at least a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university, submit undergraduate transcripts, must have earned an acceptable GPA in their undergraduate course work, and meet all other program requirements. Depending on the graduate program, applicants may need to submit documentation, like a current resume, a personal statement, letters of reference, standardized test scores, and/or meet other requirements.
