Thomas Jefferson School of Law Online

Founded in 1969 as the San Diego campus of the Western State University College of Law, the institution became the Thomas Jefferson School of Law in 1995 after it was granted provisional accreditation from the American Bar Association. The law school became a private non-profit institution in 2001 and was granted full accreditation. Thomas Jefferson School of Law intends “to provide an outstanding legal education for a nationally-based, diverse student body in a collegial and supportive environment with attention to newly emerging areas of law, particularly those related to technological development, globalization and the quest for social justice,” as stated by its website.

Programs Offered

Thomas Jefferson School of Law’s juris doctorate programs include clinical programs to provide real-life experience with meditation, pro bono, tax clinic, veterans legal clinic, the small business law center, and externships. The juris doctorate program also includes a legal writing program and two fellowship programs for students interested in intellectual property law and criminal law. Academic specialties are offered in intellectual property law, international investment and trade, entertainment and sports law, legal practice specialty, human right specialty, criminal law specialty, policy and jurisdiction, and civil rights and liberties. Thomas Jefferson School of Law, in partnership with San Diego State University, offers a combined JD-MBA degree. Study abroad programs are available over the summer in Hangzhou, China and Nice, France, as well as exchange programs in Europe and Canada.


The American Bar Association has accredited the Thomas Jefferson School of Law since July 1996.


Thomas Jefferson School of Law admissions requires applicants to submit proof of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution, an application with an application fee, a resumé, a two-to three-page, double-spaced personal statement, complete registration with the Law School Data Assembly Service (LSDAS), submit LSAT results, and submit two letters of recommendation.
