Sierra Nevada College began offering classes in 1969 with the goal in mind to incorporate the environmental aspects of the Lake Tahoe region into the academic experience. Today, the college still emphasizes the importance of sustainability and preserving the environment. SNC students have access to the Tahoe Center for Environmental Sciences, a green-built, LEED-certified lab building where students can apply scientific concepts hands-on. From its humble beginnings with a mere 23 students its first year, Sierra Nevada College has grown to nearly 500 undergraduates and about 800 graduate students pursuing master’s degrees in teaching or education. The college attracts students from across the U.S. and even from foreign countries, and was ranked by U.S. News & World Report in 2012 as being among the top 20 comprehensive western colleges. Last but not least, adult students can take advantage of online programs through Sierra Nevada College.
Sierra Nevada College offers online adult degree completion programs for older students who have completed a minimum of 45 credit hours at other colleges or universities and would like to bring those credits together and apply them toward a baccalaureate degree. Online degree completion plans include a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. Both of these programs are not only geared toward working students, but they also emphasize the college’s four core themes — entrepreneurial thinking, professional preparedness, liberal arts, and sustainability.
The curriculum for the business administration program was designed by experienced business executives and taught by teachers who have themselves achieved professional success. The psychology program is designed to prepare students for careers in areas like counseling, management, human resources and welfare, and education, as well as provide a solid foundation for graduate study, if the student is so inclined. In addition, Sierra Nevada College offers online teacher education classes.
Sierra Nevada College is accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities. The college has maintained this accreditation since 1977.
Admissions to online bachelor’s degree programs at Sierra Nevada College is limited to students who have accumulated 45 college credits. Prospective students must fill out the free online application and send copies of transcripts from all other institutions attended. Once this information is received, an admissions counselor will give students an idea of how many credits will transfer and an estimate of how long it will take to complete the program. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, and online students start classes at one of three modules within each semester. After the admissions team receives a person’s application, the applicant will generally receive an admission decision within three weeks.
