Michigan Technological University Online

This institution was originally founded as a mining school in 1885 and purposed to train mining engineers to run the local mines more efficiently. Formally referred to as Michigan Technological University and commonly known as Michigan Tech, this institution of higher education now offers undergraduate and graduate programs in the areas of sciences and arts, business and economics, engineering, technology, and forest resources and environmental science. When it comes to online education, MTU is known for its graduate online learning opportunities in the areas of technology and engineering. Students looking to advance their engineering careers may want to consider MTU, as the American Society for Engineering Education has ranked it within the top 25 universities nationally for engineering, and U.S. News & World Report has recognized it among the top 100 engineering schools.

Programs Offered

MTU offers nine online programs, including five master’s programs, one doctoral program, and three certificate programs. Along with a Ph.D. program in mechanical engineering, there are Master of Science degree programs in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, applied science education, and integrated geospatial technology. MTU also offers a Tech MBA Online program that concentrates on innovation and technology management. Graduate certificates can be earned in advanced electric power engineering and hybrid electric drive vehicle engineering. A certificate in advanced electric power engineering is available to undergraduate students, which consists of 13 credits in courses focusing on the fundamentals of electric power systems. In addition, MTU also offers physics classes online, such as extraordinary concepts physics, the physics behind music, introductory astronomy, and college physics.


MTU is regionally accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, the Higher Learning Commission. Some programs have specialized accreditations from organizations like the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, and The Society of American Foresters.


MTU has rolling admissions, but for most graduate programs, students should try to apply at least one semester in advance for admission. To be admitted into the Graduate School at MTU, you must have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution, have demonstrated through previous program of study or academic history that you are ready for advanced study, and have received a recommendation from the head of the program or concentration. Along with a completed application, prospective students must submit official transcripts, a statement of purpose, and two letters of recommendation. Depending on chosen program of study, there may be additional requirements and GRE or GMAT test scores may be required or encouraged.
