A Catholic school, Marylhurst University was founded in 1893 by the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary. Then, it was the first liberal arts college to educate women in the Northwest. Located 10 minutes south of Portland, Ore., in Marylhurst, its academic programs are still rooted in the liberal arts, but the school is now coeducational. Marylhurst’s on-campus programs offer the advantages that come with attending a small school, including a student-faculty ratio of 7:1, according to the National Center of Education Statistics (NCES). The school has approximately 900 undergraduate students and 1,000 graduate students, and 95.8% of classes have fewer than 20 students.
Marylhurst also offers short-term and long-term study abroad options, as well as a number of online classes. It is one of six institutions throughout the U.S. and Canada to be recognized by the Council for Adult & Experiential Learning as a leader for its adult learning programs.
Marylhurst University offers undergraduate degrees, graduate degrees, certificate programs, and online degrees. The most popular undergraduate majors include business management, interdisciplinary studies, and real estate studies. Graduate degrees are offered within five departments and include an MBA in sustainable business and a master’s degree in divinity. Marylhurst’s certificates serve the purpose of both enrichment and professional advancement. While some certificate programs serve as the foundation for a future degree, others are intended for those who have already have earned a bachelorâ€™s or a master’s degree. For instance, Marylhurst offers an undergraduate certificate in human resources, a graduate certificate in green development, and a postgraduate certificate in art therapy.

Marylhurst University is accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities and has been since 1977. Its music program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of the National Association of Schools of Music.
Marylhurst University has a rolling applications deadline, but students are encouraged to apply the term prior to their desired term of attendance. All students should submit a completed application form, official high school or GED transcripts, a statement of intent, a letter of recommendation, and the non-refundable application fee. Some transfer students may also need to submit transcripts from previously attended colleges or universities. First-time college students will also need to participate in an interview with the Admissions Committee.
Marylhurst prefers that applicants have a minimum high school GPA of 2.5 or average GED score of 500. All bachelor’s degree music programs and accelerated online programs have special requirements, such as mandatory auditions. Graduate students should check for specific conditions, as these vary by program. Marylhurst has an acceptance rate of 71.4%, according to the NCES.
