Until recently, Carrington College California was known as Western Career College, and was founded in Sacramento in 1967. Its name changed in 2010 when owner DeVry Inc. united Western with another one of its divisions, Apollo College, under the same Carrington name. This California branch consists of nine campuses, as well as 10 online degree programs.
Carrington awards certificates and associate degrees in a variety of fields, with a skills-based and outcomes-based approach to education. Areas of study are in health care, wellness, legal, business, and technical disciplines. Programs vary by location. There are also online programs in accounting, business, computer technology, criminal justice, graphic design, healthcare administration, health information technology, paralegal studies, renewable energy, and sales and marketing.
Carrington College California is regionally accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. It has held this distinction since 2001.
To apply to Carrington, prospective students must be at least 17 years old by the first day of classes, have a high school diploma or its equivalent — such as a GED certificate — submit an official transcript, interview with an admissions representative, and complete admission testing. There may be additional requirements based on the program, such as GPA requirements and ACT and SAT scores.
