Boston University Online

Boston University Online is a highly respected online institution that has received several awards. In 2010, Boston Online won the Sloan Consortium award for Excellence in Institution-Wide Online Education, and the United States Distance Learning Association (USDLA) Silver Best Practice Award for Distance Learning Programming. In 2011, Boston Online won the USDLA Award for 21st Century Best Practice.

Programs Offered

Boston University Online offers a 16-course undergraduate degree completion program that is designed to allow students who have completed approximately half of a bachelor’s degree to earn a Bachelor of Liberal Studies in Interdisciplinary Studies. Boston Online also offers several master’s degrees, such as Master of Arts in Art Education, Master of Science in Health Communication, Master of Criminal Justice, and Master of Science in International Marketing Management. They have three doctoral degree programs: Doctor of Musical Arts, Art Education, Doctor of Occupational Therapy, and Transitional Doctorate in Physical Therapy. In addition to their degrees, Boston Online has numerous graduate certificates in areas such as clinical investigation and project management, as well as non-credit professional certificates in areas such as paralegal studies and financial planning.


Boston University gained accreditation from the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, Commission on Institutions of Higher Education in 1929. Additionally, many of their programs, such as occupational therapy, public health, and music, have gained accreditation from nationally recognized accrediting organizations.


Boston University Online has an application deadline on January 1, an application fee, and requires applicants to have taken either the SAT or ACT. However, additional requirements vary by program. The university states that the best way for you to learn about what is required of you is to visit the school’s “apply page”, select the program you want to enroll in, and fill out the online form associated with it. The school will then put you in contact with an admissions adviser that will help guide you through the application process.
