This school first opened in 1934 as Eastern New Mexico Junior College, and became known as Eastern New Mexico University in 1949. The campus is located in Portales and currently serves more than 5,500 students through their main campus. Additional locations operate out of Ruidoso and Roswell. The university offers a number of associate, bachelor’s, and master’s programs to students with a wide variety of interests. Working adults and non-traditional students also have the opportunity to further their education with the flexibility of the ENMU’s fully-accredited online degree programs. Notable alumni of Eastern New Mexico University include Michael Blake, author of Dances with Wolves, and Edward L. Chavez, chief justice of the New Mexico Supreme Court.
Students at Eastern New Mexico University can choose from more than 60 degree options across four academic colleges. Some examples of available majors include business, education, agriculture, art, communication, biology, social work, criminal justice, English, computer science, and psychology, to name a few. Online degrees are offered at both the bachelor’s and master’s level in industry-relevant areas like business administration, aviation science, nursing, and special education. ENMU also provides special assistance to military students and families who are interested in enrolling in distance learning programs.
Eastern New Mexico University has been accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools since 1947. The school has also received recognition from specialized accrediting agencies for their programs in speech-language pathology, music, teacher education, and nursing.
Students interested in enrolling at Eastern New Mexico University can submit their application online or via mail. Official high school and college transcripts, if applicable, will need to be mailed in their original and certified form to the admissions office. Students who have completed a GED program are eligible to apply and just need to submit proof of their successful completion of the program. First-time undergraduate students will also need to submit their official SAT or ACT score reports. ENMU’s admissions standards for first-time freshman require a 2.5 GPA or higher, a 17 or higher on the ACT, or a score of 810 or higher on the SAT.
