Massachusetts

The Commonwealth of Massachusetts is home to a number of well-respected higher education institutions. Public higher education in the state is regulated by the Massachusetts Department of Education, whose board approves all new degree, diploma, and certificate programs in the state, as well as provides oversight for financial aid, fiscal and capital planning, research and performance measurement for the state’s colleges and universities, and more. A current initiative at the department is the Vision Project, which entails the overarching goal of becoming the top U.S. state in terms of the education of its citizenry and workforce and becoming the premier state for research that spurs economic development. To accomplish this goal, the state’s higher education leaders lean heavily on the state’s public and private institutions of higher education, which provide academic and career education to both recent high school graduates and adult learners through both traditional and online programs.
