The University of Southern Maine (USM) is a four-year, public institution located in Portland, Maine. The university was established 1878 as Corthell Hall in Gorham, Maine. It now comprises both the former Corthell Hall and Portland University. The school is a member of the University of Maine System. USM operates campuses in Gorham and Lewiston in addition to Portland. U.S. News & World Report ranks the University of Southern Maine 124 among Regional Universities (North) in its 2013 edition of Best Colleges. The university has a student population of 9,301 and a student-to-faculty ratio of 15 to 1.
USM comprises the colleges of arts, humanities, and social sciences, management and human service, and science, technology, and health, the Muskie School of Public Service, the schools of business, education and human development, engineering and physical sciences, environmental, health, and life sciences, music, nursing, social work, the University of Maine School of Law, and Lewiston-Auburn College. Undergraduate majors are available in several areas including accounting, art, athletic training, biochemistry, biology, criminology, economics, English, finance, linguistics, philosophy, psychology, social work, and theater. Master’s degrees are offered in applied medical sciences, biology, business administration, counseling, creative writing, education, leadership studies, music, and nursing. USM also has doctoral programs in applied medical sciences, law, public policy, nursing practice, and school psychology. For those interested in distance learning options, USM offers online bachelor’s degrees in business administration, liberal studies, applied technical leadership, and communication. Graduate degrees are available online in adult and higher education, abilities and disabilities studies, and leadership studies.
The University of Southern Maine has been accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges since 1960.
USM has a minimum academic requirement of four English units, three mathematics units, two science units, and two social sciences units at the high school level for incoming freshman. In addition, some specific majors may have additional standards. Prospective students must also submit a completed application form with a $40 fee, an official high school transcript, and official SAT or ACT score reports. Students must submit a completed personal statement and school counselor statement and/or letter of recommendation as well. The University of Southern Maine accepts applications on a rolling deadline. According to U.S. News & World Report, USM had an acceptance rate of 80% in fall 2011.
