Illinois State University is a four-year, public institution in Normal, Ill. The university was the first public institution of higher education in the state of Illinois after the establishment of the Illinois Board of Education in 1857. U.S. News & World Report ranked Illinois State University No. 156 in the National Universities category in its 2013 edition of Best Colleges. The university has a student population of 21,310 and a student-to-faculty ratio of 19 to 1. Illinois State University offers more than 160 major and minor options and 41 master’s, specialist, and doctoral programs.

Programs Offered

Illinois State University’s programs are offered through six colleges — the Colleges of Applied Science and Technology, Arts and Sciences, Business, Education, Fine Arts, and the Mennonite College of Nursing. These colleges offer several majors and minors in areas including: accounting, art, information systems, journalism, management, marketing, chemistry, dance education, early childhood education, philosophy, nursing, and speech pathology. Graduate programs are available in areas including: applied economics, art education, mathematics, music therapy, biological sciences, nursing, communication, political science, quantitative psychology, reading, educational administration, social work, family and consumer sciences, and history. Online undergraduate and graduate degree and certificate programs are also available.


The North Central Association of Colleges and Schools has accredited Illinois State University since 1913.


Admissions to Illinois State University requires student to turn in a high school transcript, ACT and/or SAT scores, and an optional academic personal statement. Applicants must complete four years of high school English, three years of high school mathematics, and two years of natural sciences, social science, foreign language, and electives.
