Founded in 1955, the University of South Florida is a four-year public institution serving nearly 48,000 students. U.S. News & World Report ranked University of South Florida No. 170 in National Universities and No. 94 in Top Public Schools. In U.S. News‘ Best Grad School Rankings, the university ranked No. 84 in Best Educational Schools. The freshman retention rate, which is an indicator of student satisfaction, is 87.8%. Currently, the University of South Florida is the ninth largest public university in the nation.
The University of South Florida offers 25 fully-online programs as part of a strategic effort to advance education opportunities in the community and around the world. Partially online courses and graduate certificates are two other options provided by the university to provide education opportunities to every student, regardless of learning style. The programs are in areas of study that include management, electrical engineering, medical sciences, global sustainability, special education, and much more. Although online learning requires a student to be self-motivated and have the ability to manage study time well, the format provides a high level of flexibility that can enable working professionals or busy adults to pursue higher education regardless of their obligations and schedule.
The Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools accredited the University of South Florida as a degree-granting institution in 1965. The school received specialized accreditation for specific programs by 13 other agencies as well.
All applicants seeking admission to the University of South Florida must meet minimum requirements outlined for their level/type of entry to qualify. For freshmen, this means submitting an application, application fee, high school transcripts, SAT/ACT scores, GED (if not a traditional high school graduate), and scores from the IELTS or TOEFL (if applicable). Because competition for the freshman level is rigorous, the school recommends a minimum grade point average (GPA) between 3.64 and 4.22. Lower-level transfer students must have completed a minimum of 67% of all attempted credit hours and submit the same documents as traditional freshmen, but include transcripts from college course work in addition to high school. Students transferring more than 24 credit hours do not have to include SAT/ACT scores or high school transcript. Graduate expectations vary depending on the program, but generally, evaluations are based on having a bachelor’s degree earned from an accredited institution, GPA on transcripts, graduate tests (GRE/GMAT/MAT), supplemental materials such as resume or special certification, and more.
