Florida International University was established in 1965 in an abandoned airfield. Despite its unique facilities, the school opened with an astonishing enrollment of 5,667 students — the largest opening enrollment in U.S. collegiate history. With more than 50,000 students enrolled in the fall of 2011, Florida International University is one of the largest public, research universities in the U.S. The institution is currently ranked among National Universities, tier 2, by U.S. News & World Report in the 2013 edition of Best Colleges. The average freshman retention rate, which is an indicator of student satisfaction, is 81.5% for full-time students at Florida International University.

Programs Offered

Florida International University Online (FIU Online) offers complete programs at the undergraduate and graduate level, as well as an array of courses. Areas of study include communication, business administration, criminal justice, nursing, real estate, human resources, occupational therapy, and more. Florida International University is proud to offer a recent addition to the graduate programs: an online Master of International Business. All of the online programs and certificates are designed to expose the students to issues they would encounter in the professional world, and to give them the preparation necessary to succeed in their career. The programs are accredited through the university and many programs have earned specialized accreditation by other organizations as well, such as the business programs.

Accreditation

Florida International University received accreditation from the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to grant degrees. Specialized accreditation was awarded by 14 other organizations.

Admissions

Freshman applicants must be graduated from an accredited secondary school or have successfully completed the GED, and must submit official scores from the SAT or ACT to the university along with a completed application and fee. Graduate applicants to Florida International University Online (FIU Online) are required to complete and submit an online application for admission and pay the $30 application fee. Official transcripts from previous colleges or universities must be included with the application, showing a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.75 (those below 3.0 will be considered based on previous work experience and other credentials). Proof of completed bachelor’s degree, four years of professional work experience or two years in addition to passing scores on the GMAT or GRE, a current resume, and a statement of purpose are also necessary to complete the graduate admission process.
