Pulaski Technical College is a two-year, public institution that was founded in 1945 as a vocational school. The college became a full-fledged technical college in 1991. The college has seven locations, including the main campus in North Little Rock, Ark., and several other sites, including the Aerospace Technology Center at the North Little Rock Airport, the Business and Industry Center in Little Rock, and more. PTC had a spring 2012 enrollment of 11,876, and its enrollment has increased a whopping 1,000% since 1991, reflecting a growing interest in career and technical training. PTC has an excellent reputation for preparing students for employment, and reports that 97% of graduates find work within six months of graduating or completing continuing education there. The college tends to attract older, nontraditional students who want to change careers, advance in their current career, or learn new skills, with the average age of PTC students being 30. In addition to offering high-quality degree and certificate programs, PTC also offers online learning opportunities that provide the flexibility needed by today’s working adults.
Pulaski Technical College offers 91 degree and certificate programs, including associate degrees, certificates, advanced certificates, and certificates of proficiency. PTC’s programs are ideal for students who want occupational training or who want to eventually transfer their credits to a four-year institution to finish a bachelor’s degree. A wide range of programs are available through the following divisions: allied health and human services, business, information technology, technical and industrial programs, fine arts and humanities, mathematics/natural and social sciences, and academic success. Health care programs include everything from dental assisting and practical nursing to anesthesia technology and radiography. Applied degree programs prepare students for careers in aviation maintenance, drafting and design, manufacturing technology, and more. Online courses at PTC are delivered through the Blackboard learning management system, and allow students to access class lectures, discussions, assignments, and exams from one convenient online location.
Pulaski Technical College has been accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, The Higher Learning Commission, since 1997. The college’s programs in dental assisting and occupational therapy assisting hold specialized accreditation from the American Dental Association and American Occupational Therapy Association, respectively, according to College Navigator.
Pulaski Technical College has an open admissions policy by which it hopes to increase access to higher education, and students may apply at any time of the year, according to the college website. Students must show a photo ID, such as a driver’s license, passport, or military ID, when registering for classes. However, just because a student is admitted to the college, does not mean he or she will be automatically admitted to any program, as some programs in allied health and cosmetology have special admissions requirements beyond what is required for many programs. To apply, an applicant must submit a completed application, submit a GED or official high school transcript complete with graduation date and GPA, proof of two MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) immunizations, and submit ACT or COMPASS scores that are no more than five years old. Students with COMPASS reading scores less than 61 must enroll in PTC’s Student Success Program.
