The University of Phoenix is a four-year, private for-profit institution, and the largest and best-known online university in the nation. Founded in 1976, the university continues its commitment to providing high-quality degree and certificate programs that are geared toward helping working adults fit a higher education into their busy lives. Aside from providing reputable online programs available throughout the U.S. and around the world, the University of Phoenix features more than 200 physical locations across the nation that offer campus-based courses and programs. The university has 20 years of experience in online education. The University of Phoenix offers a wide range of degree programs at the associate, bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral levels, as well as certificates, individual courses, and continuing education. These programs are available through the following nine colleges and schools: the School of Business, College of Nursing, School of Advanced Studies, College of Education, College of Criminal Justice and Security, College of Information Systems and Technology, College of Humanities, College of Social Sciences, and College of Natural Sciences. Some of the university’s most popular programs are offered through the School of Business, which offers 12 different bachelor’s-level business specializations, including accounting, finance, global business management, sustainable enterprise management, marketing, and more. Other notable programs include the MBA program, the RN-to-BSN program for registered nurses, the Master of Public Administration, and the Master of Health Administration, which features concentrations in gerontology, informatics, and education. Online classes at the University of Phoenix feature small class sizes in which students are placed on learning teams of three or more students that allow for easy collaboration. Online students also connect with each other through an academic social network called PhoenixConnect.
Prospective University of Phoenix students typically begin the admissions process either by calling the university and speaking with an enrollment representative, or by filling out an information request form online at the UOP website. Students who opt to fill out the online form will be contacted by an adviser shortly thereafter. The university has an open admissions policy, according to College Navigator. Even so, applicants to undergraduate programs still must show that they have earned one of the following: high school diploma, GED, California High School Proficiency Examination certificate, or foreign secondary school equivalent. Undergraduate applicants must also be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or hold a valid visa, as well as submit official test scores and transcripts from all colleges and universities attended (see additional undergraduate admissions requirements here).
