CGCC opened in 1985 as an extension of Mesa Community College, and became an independently accredited college in 1992. CGCC had a 2011-2012 enrollment of more than 19,600 students that it serves primarily through university transfer programs and workforce development programs. The college is composed of three campuses ? the Pecos Campus in Chandler, the Williams Campus in Mesa, and the Sun Lakes Center in Sun Lakes. Academically gifted students can participate in CGCC’s honors program, which offers potential special scholarships and fee waivers to eligible students, allows students to explore subjects in greater depth with faculty and guest lecturers, and organizes special cultural and social activities. In addition to offering high-quality campus-based courses, CGCC offers a variety of online classes for students who need more flexibility in their program of study.
Chandler-Gilbert Community College offers a wide range of degree and certificate programs, including academic degrees for students who plan to transfer to a four-year degree program, and occupational degrees for students who want to enter the workforce upon graduation. Certificate programs tend to be shorter-term programs and provide focused study in a specific area, such as electric utility technology, fire investigation, homeland security, and flight technology. Degree programs are available in accounting, elementary education, fine arts, business, dietetic technology, retail management, nursing, and more. Online courses at CGCC are delivered either through the Blackboard course management system or a new system called Canvas, and consists of either fully online courses or hybrid courses, which require a blend of face-to-face and online learning. Students who are unfamiliar with online learning technology will be able to take an e-learning orientation, which will walk them through the online system; they can also view video tutorials on common online course functions.
Chandler-Gilbert Community College has been accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, The Higher Learning Commission, since 1992. In addition, the college’s dietetics technician program and nursing program are accredited by specialized accreditation agencies, according to College Navigator.
Chandler-Gilbert Community College has an open admissions policy, and the admissions process is designed to be smooth and seamless. The admissions process begins by setting up an account at my.maricopa.edu, where the student will apply for admission and financial aid. During this process, students will also obtain a Maricopa Enterprise ID, student ID, and Maricopa email account. After this, students take placement tests, go through advising, register for classes and new student orientation, and pay tuition and fees. Bear in mind that even though CGCC has an open admissions process, students generally must still submit proof of identity and proof of prior education, typically by showing a valid driver’s license or ID and submitting applicable transcripts.
